It tells the story of a multi generation family in the south , where bitter feelings still ran high about the segregational problems between Blacks and Whites. it showed the difficulties for both sides fo this family. I simply could not put this book down. One of the most interesting books I have read in a long time. It touched my heart.(less)

Yes, southerners will both understand and recoil at the attitudes, love the revenge, be frustrated at the various characters. All true, but what descriptions of nature and the land! I was done, start to finish, in just under a week.(less)

There are so…moreI really don't know why so many are saying it's set in Alabama. It seems to me the text was intentionally vague about what state it's in. There are so many references to Atlanta that for a while I assumed it was in Georgia. When I heard references to "Somerset County," I tried to figure it out, and while there are four states that have counties named Somerset, none of them are in the South. So I concluded she really wanted it to remain vague, so she dropped confusing and misleading references everywhere. (less)
