It tells the story of a multi generation family in the south , where bitter feelings still ran high about the segregational problems between Blacks and Whites. it showed the difficulties for both sides fo this family. I simply could not put this book down. One of the most interesting books I have read in a long time. It touched my heart.(less)

was it one to keep your interest... just going by when you started to when you finished... or you like me... distracted ... and pick up reading a few at the same time.... ? I'll have to take a look for it.....

Yes, southerners will both understand and recoil at the attitudes, love the revenge, be frustrated at the various characters. All true, but what descriptions of nature and the land! I was done, start to finish, in just under a week.(less)

I read the book and thought it was set in Mississippi because there are references to "the trace" and "Honey Island Swamp" which borders Mississippi. Why do I read reviews setting it in Alabama definitively? The references to Chattanooga and Smoky Mountains? Seemed to me like Abigail went to Ole Miss, but obviously I missed something.

There are so many references to Atlanta that for a while I assumed it was in Georgia. When I heard references to "Somerset County," I tried to figure it out, and while there are four states that have counties named Somerset, none of them are in the South. So I concluded she really wanted it to remain vague, so she dropped confusing and misleading references everywhere. (less)
