Did you think Dr. Thompson was gay? His early correspondence with Dr. Ellis seemed to suggest that the two doctors had once been lovers. But that aspect of the story (and of Dr. Thompson's character) was dropped in the second half of the book. Am I overreaching? What did you make of it?
