The name of the powder is mentioned before the battle.

As this was the main element of last battle at mines probably the author used it. (less)

There are some inside things that you won't quite get unless you read the first book and there are several references to instances in the first book. Plus, the first couple of chapters are hard to understand unless you read the first book. Hope this helps!(less)
