Can someone tell me why Jack has no shoes when he witnesses the Major killing the 10 rioters who were trying to surrender at the end of this book? Jack mentions that he is "shoeless" and "muddy" but not how or why that is.

To reveal it prematurely could prove a bit of a spoiler to some readers. Some readers (like my dear mother) skip a lot when they read - IF that's the case here, then someone skipped too much. (less)
