Art I felt the "connections" you cited were appropriate for the form of the book. This is a genealogical study that comes to life through the characters. …moreI felt the "connections" you cited were appropriate for the form of the book. This is a genealogical study that comes to life through the characters. Yes there are lots of characters to relate to; and yes you need to know that there are no real "happy" endings. All of the characters do die; but with a coverage of 4,5,6 or more generations of families, that makes the book real and thorough. What I loved most about the book is the complications of life and the survival aspects of the story. There are many fascinating and complicated characters, just like we have in our own families.(less)
