Do you need to read this series in order? I have book 1 on my Kindle, but I also have an opportunity to read book 4...Will I be missing a lot if I haven't read the 2 in the middle or if I start with 4?

Reading them in order is generally better as you don't get spoilers. Book 1 keeps you guessing to the end, so by reading Book 4 first, there might be some spoilers for Book 1, 2 or 3, depending on your memory. However, this author has done a very good job of completing Book 1 so I image each story will be a worthwhile standalone.(less)
