Hugo wan't just a novelist, he was a …moreI've read the Norman Denny translation and to me he truly grasped the poetry and drama of Victor Hugo's writing. Hugo wan't just a novelist, he was a poet and a playwright and Denny communicates that in his translation very well. As I was reading it I couldn't stop thinking, "Why do they teach Shakespeare when every single line of Hugo is this deep, poetic, profound truth?". Some have stated that the language he uses is less true to the French version, but I believe he captured the spirituality, and this other-worldly quality of the novel the best of all the translations.(less)

There is not much of anything "inappropriate", but there are some pretty bloody battle scenes, which are fairly descriptive. There are no sex scenes, two characters kiss and that is it (it is not very " visual". Basically Hugo says "they kissed." and that is that.) Mostly you need to have a lot of patience to read this, because Hugo has a habit of droning on about subjects that don't seem like they benefit the story, but definitely do. Also, I am fourteen, and this book is one of my all-time favorites.(less)

I’m a 14 year old, and a massive fan of the musical. I’ve been eager to read the book as well, but I’ve been told it’s quite political, and my mum had to skip whole chapters - although she also DNFed the Lord of The Rings, and I’ve read them all multiple times. I read above my age level - but I still mostly read YA. Do you think this would be too complicated / too boring for a teenager?

Do not read an abridged version (sorry "A H"). Forcing yourself through the boring parts this wonderful book is part of the experience. I read this when I was 14 (a year ago) and it was an ordeal I want to go through again and angain for the rest of my life. You could and should read this book, possibly more than once across your life. Enjoy!(less)
