Although I haven't read Skagboys yet, I just finished Trainspotting and would highly recommend.
I'm not sure if Skagboys will refer forward to events or not, but it very well might be useful to have read the 'main event' first. (less)

It does obviously contain heroin usage, and topics such as sex are reoccurring topics and can be described in graphic detail. The novel also contains a lot of course language. There is also mentions of death.
However, it's an amazing novel and is quite a fun read as it's written in a Scottish accent. However, I would say it is for mature readers and probably shouldn't be read by someone under 15.
If you want to know what the books will be like, I suggest watching the movie. (less)
