This is actually the second offshoot of the original series. Dark Sword (titles end with highlander), then Dark Warrior (titles start with Midnight's) then Dark King (titles are fire related). I didn't start with the dark sword series (I couldn't find it), but have read the rest in order. I would recommend that you start with "Dark Heat" if you have to read a series from a beginning point, but if you don't mind going in "cold" you can read them as "stand alone"s.
