Faith is 14 throughout the bulk of the novel. On the Origin of Species was published in 1859. 14 - 5 = 9. 1859 + 9 = 1868. Also, the type of crinoline that the book discusses was popular in the late 1860's and 1870's.

Hardinge likes to dedicate a significant portion of her novels (having also read Gullstruck Island and A Face Like Glass) to building a comprehensive foundation before moving on to the much more exciting and fast paced climax / main plot, and part of my enjoyment from reading her novels comes from how those "boring" chapters were suddenly made meaningful as I uncover the main plot.(less)
