The age would put the boy in his late 80s when Pa Salt died, and Marina said Pa was 'well over 80'. It would explain how he came to have the Cristo statue and the tile from Laurant, and why he was so intent on adopting Maia. He must have tracked Bel's family through the generations somehow(less)

That being said, I would still recommend starting at the beginning if you think you're going to want to read the whole series - and there are some threads that weave through all books.(less)
