My MIL is Vietnamese & I quickly recognized much of the syntax/grammar from her speech. You will hear it a lot if you've ever traveled to SE Asia & listened to the way the locals speak English. Grammar is the hardest thing to master in a 2nd language. The Americans are adapting their syntax/grammar to match the way the ruling Japanese speak English. Personally, I thought it was really nice detail. (less)

The book has very little action, no underground Resistance movement, no scenes set in New York or Nazi-dominated territory, hence no mind-blowing swastikas or Nazi uniforms or Obergruppenführer. Mostly characters sit and talk, think, cast the I Ching, and/or wait for someone to arrive. It's more a philosophical novel than a thriller. But it gives a more detailed alternate history - you hear about what's happened to the whole world - that's interesting. (less)

I'm 140 pages in and am eagerly awaiting something, anything to happen! So far, it's plodding along. Was expecting more about a struggle to overthrow the powers in charge. Instead, it's a crawl about fake antiques. This take picks up momentum soon, right?
