In a school from K-8, would this be more of a YA novel due to the subject and characters? Usually with permission, as young as Grade 5 students can borrow YA books and I want to see if we need to have the YA label on or not. I see most labels on Goodreads say Teen/YA.

There is no bad language in the book as Kieren 'bleeps' it all out, but it is implied. The domestic violence situation is pretty horrible, but not too graphic. And the step dad is a drug dealer so there are drug references. As Kieren is quite innocent, you see everything through his viewpoint. (less)

Can someone please tell me how old Kieran is? I tried finding it in the book but all he said was that he won a contest for the "under sixteens catagory" but it also said he did SAT's last year. Im doing a book report on this.
