Do you need to read the series in order?

Patricia I recommend reading the books in order because the relationships of the characters develop, especially Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James.

I recently finished A share in Death and really enjoyed it. I 'm not sure if I want to purchase all of the 19 books HOWEVER, I do want to keep reading the series...My question I guess is, which of the first few books are important for the series in terms of character building? The second one doesnt sound so looking at the reviews but all recommendations are appreciated! Cheers.

So, I am going to say it's set in the date the book was published - 1993-ish is the setting/time. (less)
