I know this is a series, however can you read this book without having read the others?

The first ID book I read was "Visions in Death", I did not know that there were other books in the series. I looked at the front of the book again and saw a list, then I hunted up all the books before Visions and read them diligently (have read the full series 4 times now - am on my 5th [reading Thankless right now]).(less)

I'm in the middle of a re-read of the book, and there's a scene where Dallas does her crime scene analysis and focuses on a tray of food as an element that doesn't quite jibe. She then says, "The tray's the thing." (Chapter 11) Does anyone else think this might be an oblique Shakespeare reference? "The play's the thing. Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king." (Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2).
