Has anyone else read this? It got good reviews in People magazine, but I am BORED, and have had to take a break from it and move on to some others. I'm about 2/3 of the way through...does it get better???

I know I'm missing something obvious, but I can't see it. In the chp. 1935, the 4 yr. old get up from his nap and the house is empty. He plays and looks around. When he looks outside he see something red and thinks it may be waving at him. Is it him mom in the distance? What is it? I know it's silly but I can't answer it myself.
