Maybe I missed this... It was described when Pam and Pope woke Pilcher up for the first time, but I never figured out how the first person to wake up got out of the chamber. Maybe they could set a timer, but if the person who wakes up is completely disoriented and amnesiatic , how would the first person have faired? [spoilers removed]

What is the point of having the townies at all? Why not just move into the future with the 'inner circle' of people that actually want to be there? There really isn't a great story without them, but I just don't see a good enough reason as to why they had to be there in the first place....

I decided it was just more evidence that Pilcher really was a mad scientist who craved the chance to play God. Completely amoral. He couldn't have gotten away with all the surveillance and micro-management of the town if everyone was in on it.(less)
