I had a small group of eighth graders read it. They loved it....they did not believe that it was based on true stories. (less)

Her parents send her off to be a maid and she believes that is what the man is doing and where he is taking her. (This sounds incredible but it happens often - exactly as the book describes.) She's never seen prostitution or a brothel. She doesn't have a reference for what is happening to her. She is also drugged.(less)

A bit into the book, her stepfather says she's going to go to the city to work and have money to send home to them, however, as Lakshmi soon realizes, she was sold into sex slavery as a barely teen girl. We see her reactions, her depressions, friendships, the few things she can look forward to, and the many things she succumbs to in this new life. (less)

She wanted to keep it brief, because she wants you to be able to think and create the rest of Lakshmi story. Whether or not she was able to be rescued, or maybe sent back to the Happiness House.

About her sister... I think that may also be up to the imagination to the reader. I personally believe she was a maid like Lakshmi, however we don't get much, to really make that assumption.
