The major themes covered are ones that many Christian and non-Christian religions actually agree on: family, honesty, courage, standing up for what you believe in, staying true to oneself, believing in oneself, respect and compassion for others even when you don't agree or get along with them, etc.
I do believe the author is Christian.
I would not hesitate to recommend this book to kids who like fantasy and adventure woven together in an engaging story. It's not preachy nor does the author talk down to children. The Green Ember is a great read-aloud for all ages in a public school classroom as well as Vacation Bible School. (less)
