Is this a retelling? I swear I've read this story before. Callum Mckennis (I'm sure I butchered the name) sounds really really familiar. Anyone know stories similar to this one?

Spoiler alert question: I read the story, though contrary to the majority, I did not particularly enjoy it. I did not really understand why did the protagonist seek the cave? I feel like there was no real motif, only later it was revealed that Callum killed his daughter and, so, in the end, he left him to die the same death. However, I do not get the point why he went to the cave in the first place?
