Maybe try Vol 3: Dream Country first.

Preludes & Nocturnes is the first volume of the Graphic Novels but its the least *Sandman-esque* of the whole sage. Neil Gaimen starts with something closer to horror and doesn't really settle on the fable like tone that has defined the series until the very last story in that volume. The one where Dream spends time in a park feeding pigeons with his big sister Death.

There are 10 core graphic novels (and more by Neil and others playing in the same "sandbox") and while 7 have a plot line that advances through them; the other three are just collections of "one shot" short stories.

You could start there instead. You'll feel the sensibilities of the series more clearly than you will in Preludes. There may be somethings that are not immediately spelled out, but I don't think Volume 3: Dream Country has any serious spoilers.

My unconventional suggestion!(less)
