While I am dead certain that I would not be friends with anyone at all like Bambi Brewer in real life (or her friend Lorraine Gelman, for that matter) it's interesting to read about them and see how their lives work and how they think. Ms. Lippman's best novels do just that, which makes them more than simply mysteries. (less)

I have read a few of Lippman's stand alones. All were pretty decent, except for "When She Was Good", which was in my opinion... Amazing! Does "After I'm Gone" compare?

**SPOILER ALERT** Is Sydney the baby Kitty gave up for adoption? The timeline fits, the hurried and hushed adoption, and Sydney's noted red hair (quite similar to Kitty's). I know Tess and Kitty aren't main characters in this book, but Tess is mentioned via Sandy's casual relationship with Crow and a brief encounter with Crow & Carla- and the locales overlap.

I don't know the answer but I spent much of the book trying to figure out who Sydney's mother was. The red hair seemed an important clue but no one in the book matched that hint. I've read some of the Tess Monaghan series but didn't remember the detail about Kitty having a child that she put up for adoption. Maybe that happened after I stopped reading the series. I wondered why there was some emphasis put on Sydney's adoption if they weren't going to close the loop at the end of the book. I found your question when I went onto Goodreads to post a question about Sydney's adoption. (less)
