Regarding the Cull of Unta according to Heboric in book 2, Empress Laseen used "the opportunity to round up malcontents and unaligned academics, to close the fist of military presence on the capital, drumming the need for more troops, more recruits, more protection against the treasonous scheming of the noble class. The seized assets paid for this martial expansion.
After the Cull, order was reinstated, the victims' assets were seized by the empire and the surviving victims were deported as slaves.'
So while it was a horrific act it was also an effective one. A few hundred killed for the benefit of the whole empire.(less)

A lot of people say that MoI is where the series really, *really* begins. If I did not like Gardens and got really bored and had my eyes glaze over from Deadhouse, would I enjoy MoI?

It's perfectly normal to find GotM boring and though I loved Deadhouse, it is a different style of book, so disliking it doesn't mean you necessarily dislike Malazan. I found it extremely moving and powerful, but it didn't quite have the "cool" moments that MOI has. A lot of people consider MOI the best book in the series. It gets back to a lot of the characters you learned about in the first book and features a lot more of the super powerful characters like Annomander Rake. The last 3rd/4th of the book is incredible, but I thought the book was great all the way through. So I would say try to get through the first 3rd/4th of the book and if the Toc/Tool and QuickBen/Bridgeburners storylines are really not doing it for you, then its safe to go ahead and quit. (less)

I haven't read any of these books, but, I'm not a fan of fantasy. Seems to be rated highly. Are readers of these books mostly male?

Skyla Lincoln No. I am a female and greatly enjoyed this book. Some really strong female characters!
