I so much want to like this book and the author, but I'm encountering blatant misogyny and it's detracting from the book. The female characters are either stunningly gorgeous and extremely fit, or fat and dumpy, with no chance at a happy life. One character is described as not fit for marriage because she's "heavy". Anyone else find his writing to be misogynistic?

Remember, this book was written in the 1990's and takes place in the 1990's. Times have changed and people are much more aware of how characters are written. Try Krueger's other book, This Tender Land - beautifully written and with realistic characters.(less)

Does anyone else feel like the C.J. Box Joe Pickett series is a little bit of a rip-off of this series? I like them both, but just feel like there are a lot of similarities in the feel of the characters.

I'm not seeing it in many reviews: How much does the Windigo figure into this story? Is the Windigo and associated ghost stories just in there to scare and set the mood? To make the native American lore seem authentic? Or is it more serious? I've read about 100 pages. If this is actually about some malevolent ghost, then i don't want to read anymore.

Is it important to read the Cork O'Connor Mystery Series in order? My reason to read it out of order would be just because of availability at the library.
