I am 40 pages from the end, but can't wait to ask.... What is with all the Mallory hate by Simmons?? He paints him as such an unpleasant, potentially unethical person, but I have found no evidence of this as being truthful. I realise that this is fiction, but Mallory is not a fictional character, and painting him in such a negative way did not seem necessary to the story.

I'm currently reading the abominable by Simmons and I'm on chapter 19 in third part I only have about ten chapters left to go and so far I have no idea what your speaking of. Mallory is already long dead in fact they discover his body on the mountain. The only character I can think you are talking about would be the head climber Richard Deacon. I for one didn't have a huge problem with him, yes he is a bit uppity but I'm my opinion most Brits are, no offense it's just how they come off. One thing I do have a problem with so far is his revelation about hitler. And first just let me say that I absolutely am Not a nazi sympathizer at all, yes I am German /Irish decent but what Hitler dis during and before wwII is absolutely disgusting and wrong on all accounts period. However the fact that people are looking at this as historical fiction keyword fiction but just as proven above with other comments simply about ones attitude I find it absolutely disgusting ,the allegations about hitler and him having sex with small boys being a pedofile . Yes hitler was borderline satan himself and did horrendous things to millions of inocent people that being said I have never heard of these specific allegations and after reading it I even tried to google it to find out if it was true. And found absolutely nothing. I just think something that terrible of accusation, fiction or not, when you are using the name of an actual person even if it is satan himself is just wrong in my opinion.others found it disturbing when they thought Simmons had simply made mallorys attitude to harsh. Hitler did plenty of more than horrendous things to hurt people during and before the war why not just use those events in the story. Like I said I am in no way in favor of hitler what he did was unforgivable but to claim someone , anyone who is a real person is what they say in the story is just wrong. Again maybe he did but I couldn't find anything online showing that he did only some accusations that he had affairs with grown men but that is not the same as saying someone rapes little boys. Which I in general didn't think it brought anything to what was already a great story to the story line I was expecting a much different story when I bought this book and am now just a bit disappointed not because of the hitler accusations but because I was expecting Simmons to go in a much different direction with this story. After reading summer of nights which is what drew me to Simmons I was just expecting something different. (hide spoiler)]

I absolutely loved Carrion comfort and Terror by Dan Simmons and the Abominable was going to be my next choice but I have read a few bad reviews. I'm really interested in the historical references on his books, based on that would you recommend buying The Abominable?

Am I missing something concerning one major plot point? A year prior to our main narrative- the Everest climb-P Bromley and his cohort are chased up the mountain by nazis. The nazis are pursuing them in order to reclaim the salacious contraband. The nazis kill them, but leave the bodies alone near the peak of Everest with contraband on them- then go back a year later to reclaim them? Did I not understand this part?

Dan Simmons talks too much?

Matt Reardon I disagree in general. Maybe a little wordy and sometimes repetitive in this particular book though. I did still enjoy it however.
