Balaam destroyed (took out?) one of Pedro's eyes. This was explicit in his early drafts, but it's the "page" that Teddy Roosevelt objected to, so Wister toned down the description to the point where it can hardly be understood when first reading it. Why exactly does Trampas hate the Virginian? I'm halfway through the book and don't understand Trampas' hostility yet. Possibly because there's not much substance to understand about it.
