They are discussed before returning to the "crooked house" after Nannie died. It's is written that Brenda craved romance, and Lawrence had "vague future dreams of bliss rather than the concrete satisfactions of the flesh." Brenda was bored, and an "unhappy love affair suited them as well or better than commonplace married life together." So, there wasn't really much of a relationship, and they weren't going to marry after her husband had died, as least that's the way it seemed to me. Lawrence had been fired and left anyway.(less)

Again we are repeatedly reminded of the crookedness of the murderer (no spoiler) and that all the worst qualities of the crooked family had amassed in them. Also the murderer was described as having an ego problem so you can't judge them according to the normal scale. Judging by people at that age are often very sensitive and feel that everything revolves around them.(less)
