This case broke Scorcher down and made him doubt all the progress he'd made with the decades of therapy that allowed him to live in a messy, complicated, adult world - control, perfection, cause/effect, all out the window. Dina's never been able to fully develop into an adult in the first place. By the end of this book they're both the same, broken, devastated kids they were the summer their mom committed suicide. Dina might not have drowned with her mother but she's carried the weight of extreme mental illness with her all her life, and Scorcher's needed to carry that burden too, as implied by her being soaking wet at the end and getting the bedding/his pjs wet as well.(less)
