He and others (no spoilers) will appear in the first two trilogies prominently.

I recommend reading them in order. There is a "Gap Filler" book as well "The Silver Spike" that fills in stuff before and between the first and second trilogy. (less)

That being said, you might want to give it another go, as things do get better. It had been many years since my previous reading of the book, and I was quite surprised by how episodic the book was; I'd completely forgotten everything. One thing to realize is that this was written over 30 years ago, when Cook was really just beginning to really figure out that "writing stuff". He'd published some short stories, and a few novels, but this was his first really big "hit". Read the novel more as a series of novellas; focus on the characters, who really do drive the story along, and it might work better for you. FWIW, I'm now re-reading the second book in the series, and it flows much better, despite being two over-lapping stories told in alternating chapters, which will come together at the end. I hope this helped you :-)(less)

However, the main characters are not "good guys" and it is mentioned that rape is a normal part of their routine when it is possible as a result of defeating an enemy.

I found this article which compares it favourably to GoT which is well known for having problems in this regard:
