It is not explained. But since it didn't give us a date when the pandemic hit, I guessed it was close to our present day but may have been some years in the future. I assumed the planetary changes were due to global warming further intensified by the fires set during the chaos and attempts to kill off the virus that followed and possibly some more severe reactions, such as countries bombing infected areas in an attempt to stop the spread.(less)
