("She's only twenty-one years old, my sister. She's just a kid.") On page 194, we learn that Hank is 6 years older than his sister. ("my father. . . sat slackly in his pew. . . his twelve-year-old son and six-year-old daughter standing wide-eyed on either side of him.")

So this would make Hank only 27 in the first book. This would explain why he's so earnest and serious about solving his first murder case - he wants to practice the profession he has aspired to for most of his life in the short time he has left before the asteroid hits.

I would instead live every day as I normally do, taking pleasure in reading as many books as possible, playing as many games as possible, and watching as many shows as possible.

Of course, my answer would vary depending on the exact meaning of "the end of the world". If the universe were to suddenly collapse, then nothing could be done to prevent it; if the world as we know were to suddenly end yet we were still clinging to life somehow, then some measures could be taken to ensure self-preservation; if the university entrance exams were coming in 6 months, then our world might end but the world around us might not.(less)
