Jason It's a beautifully written book but it is very bleak and sad. You need to be in a frame of mind to cope with tragedy and human barbarism to get through it.

It's certainly not intended for children, any more than Watership Down was, but it will make children think, which I would argue is what you want. In my view, it's perfectly appropriate for mature early teens or older.(less)

There are numerous instances of cruelty and (arguably worse) indifference to cruelty to animals in the book. It’s hard to read. You’ll get angry, you’ll tear up.

This is the rare case where I might recommend watching the movie first. It’s different from the book—how it differs would be a spoiler—but if you can handle that I think you can handle the book, and it’s different enough that you won’t know what’s coming.

Hope that helps. (less)
