Do I need to have read the previous two novels to understand this novel?

Ursula Wright it might be better to read some of Lovecrafts short stories before. because it borrows heavily from them.

I read the first book and read the synopsis for the second one and it didn't interest me. Can I skip the second one and come into this one and be alright?

Owen Can you? Sure. It is completely possible. And references to Cabal's previous adventures are slight. From the standpoint of the plot of the The Fear In…moreCan you? Sure. It is completely possible. And references to Cabal's previous adventures are slight. From the standpoint of the plot of the The Fear Institute, the adventures in The Detective are superfluous.

I do recommend reading both of the previous books and the short stories. Not merely for completion, nor because they are ripping good yarns well told, but because they inform Cabal's character and his arc becomes more obvious. (less)
