I would like to read more post-apocalyptic books that, like this one, aren't dystopian in nature. That is, I like post-apocalyptic books that focus on characters that are moral and them struggling to overcome great odds and, to some extent, succeed. Any recommendations? I also liked David Palmer's Emergence and Gordon R. Dickson's Wolf and Iron.

It's when you try to harness the energy on an industrial scale to make steam engines or propellant that some sort of limit is exceeded and the process(energy) is tamped down.

I read that in this book Tolkien's Legendarium is concidered a holy book. And I was wondering how much those works get referenced in this book/series? I'm not saying that me reading this depends on the amount of Tolkien is mentioned in it, but actually that's pretty much exactly what I'm saying.
