Conrad's prose is often impenetrable and may take many focused attempts.
Having said that. You would hate Nostromo - but you would be wrong. The characters in this book are grandiose, scenery exotic, and the plot mythological. This is monumental writing without showing off. Read.(less)

I've read and re-read Conrad's Heart of Darkness and thoroughly enjoyed it. So, with that in mind, do you think I'd enjoy Nostromo? At first glance it strikes me merely as an adventurous piece of romanticism. Thanks.

I think if you read only the surface story, it can be seen as an adventure. Below the surface, the conflicts and desires, the hopes and the curses in our lives intertwine in the subtext, and this is where it becomes illuminating. Not an easy read, and needs to be digested in small chunks, but a masterful work.(less)
