Valid question. However, we cannot expect fictional men, especially one that's written to the standards of historical patriarchy, to have the same moral grounds as that of a contemporary man. Lisa wrote Sebastian as a challenge—is she capable of redeeming a character that is normally considered to be irredeemable? I guess most people agree that she successfully did. Lisa did not cower from writing a horrible man. It is valid that you don't think he should be forgiven but the story is not asking for total absolution of his sins; it is asking for a chance to grow and take accountability, specifically for someone as horrible as Sebastian. Lisa was never aiming for moral purity and is not asking every reader to forgive him for his sins, but for the character to reckon with the damage he's caused. And Sebastian did; he suffered and he deserved that. Whether or not you think it was enough, that's up to you to be convinced. Nonetheless, a good portion of readers found him compelling and his reformation was believable enough for this book to garner a high average rating.(less)
