Before that, Rudyard Kipling used used the word "grinching" in 1892, referring to a harsh, grating noise. Grinch had also been used as a last name for characters since about the early 1900s.

As to why a Grinch is called a Grinch specifically, I'd bet even Dr. Seuss would just shrug and say something along the lines of "It sounded about right".(less)
