But when I finally had a SOCIAL historian step in and teach the remainder of the term after the assigned prof had disappeared, I began to LOVE history. This is the quote that changed it for me: "From the beginning, the history of America has been 'Go West, to the frontier.' And then one day, the frontier disappeared." The book Big Rock Candy Mountain explores that theme very well, and also gives us a wonderful strong woman protagonist.(less)
