It is too gory, such as people who were killed by the sirens and then eaten, and it describes the gore, and how they were ripped open and that there were bugs crawling through and on the bodies. As well as some underlying sexual themes as Abigail said below. I would say that a mature 8th grader who reads stuff like this should be fine. If they could read a PG-13 movie that has a lot of violence than this one should be fine. (less)

The first one though does explain a lot that I feel it necessary it is a good book and I disagree with Laura I think you should read it, it was particularly 'horrible' just a bit slow at the start, but once you get into the good parts it gets good. So I'd say sure if you ever get the chance go read it.(less)
