Who here has read Peter James? Can anyone compare Det. Roy Grace and this detective for me? I read the first Insp. Banks book and didn't love it. But I'm thinking of returning to the series. So many people can't be wrong!

Two questions: this book is 35 yrs old. Technology has changed crime investigation so much in the intervening years, I wonder if it would be difficult to read. I read a Michael Connelly novel from 1996 recently, and they were using faxes and sending digital images over a modem was cutting edge tech. It was weird. Do I need to read these books in order?
