The book adds a certain depth and vibrancy that neither of the screen versions could capture. The HBO miniseries is relatively faithful to the book; the film version was obviously "sanitized" in order to pass muster with the censors.(less)

This is an excellent book in vintage crime that starts out a bit soapy, but builds into a well-crafted tale. You will enjoy Mildred and her gang of very descriptive characters. Veda is an opportunistic daughter! Who could blame Mildred for wanting to rid herself of her?

Bill Jenkins What crime? No one even got a parking ticket in this story.
