Here's how I do it: I don't watch television. All the time that I used to waste sitting in front of the tube I now use to read. I got out of the habit of watching TV when I moved away to attend university and couldn't afford cable, and the little university town I lived in was too far from any major cities for reliable analog transmissions. Also, I have different formats of books for different occasions. I have treeware books for reading during the day, MP3 or CD audiobooks, mostly checked out through the library or downloaded for free from LibriVox, that I listen to while driving or doing the daily puzzles in the paper (Cryptoquote, Daily Jumble, Sudoku, and the New York Times crossword in syndication), and I have e-books for nighttime because my e-reader has a built-in light in its screen that I can adjust. So I'm always reading at least three books at one time and often more. That's how I can finish roughly two books a week, irrespective of length (right now I'm reading my longest book yet, The Count of Monte Cristo at 1276 pages in treeware format and I'm halfway done). Also, I normally read between 2-4 pages a minute and can read between 6-8 pages a minute if I'm speed reading, while the average is—or so I've been told—a page a minute. However, listening to audiobooks moderates that rate a bit, since you have to follow the pace set by the reader.

Audiobooks seem to be a good alternative when you can't read, for example when you're cooking. I might start listening to audiobooks.
And watching less TV is also a great idea.
My goal will probably be a book a week. Since I have a lot of free time during the Summer it may be more, especially for the long plane and car rides during vacation.
i was planning to read like five, but my summer vacation has just started and i've already read 20, so just goes to show...
I hope to read one book every 2-6 days. Finally have a break from college so I'm gonna take advantage of the time I have to read fun books.

I usually like reading long books between 800 and 1000 pages, but then I am happy when I finish it in a month. 14 books a year was my maximum. And then I read shorter books in between.
How can someone read that many books AND still have a job and friends/family, other hobbies etc? Maybe I am just a slow reader.
