Order your to-read shelf!

Posted by Otis Chandler on May 13, 2008
We've made some improvements to the recently launched order your to-read shelf feature.

In addition to being able to move items up and down, you can now use the edit view to enter the exact number you'd like to reorder the list to! This interface has worked well for Netflix so we thought - why reinvent the wheel?

On a side note I think the ability to order my shelves (you can make any shelf orderable in 'edit shelves') is the coolest feature we've launched this year. From a usability perspective what was happening was that as people added more and more books to their to-read list it became so large as to be useless - people were being forced to make separate 'to-read-soon' lists. I believe the ordering will fix this issue - and set the stage for many other things!

jacky This feature is totally awesome! I love that we can order overall, but I especially love the editing feature which is much easier than moving a book up and down one spot at a time. Keep up the great work! There have been so many fabulous improvements this year :)

Dora Very cool. I had a separate bookshelf for the next books I'm planning to read. I can dump that one now. Thanks!

Lasairfiona Smith That is pretty cool. You are making this site better and better all the time. Thank you so much for feeding my book addiction. :D

Lisa Vegan Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!!

Marco, the "read" shelf is the only shelf we can't order with numbers 1 to whatever. However, there's all sort of views with which you can view it.

message 8: by Amari (new)

Amari neat idea. i must say that when i saw the title of this post my eyes got very big, because i thought it meant "order" as in "buy in a single click" and, in short, i was afraid (cf. prufrock).

:)

Diane At the risk of sound computer illiterate - which I admit I am - Otis, can you please give more detailed instruction on how to renumber the to read shelf? I've tried (and tried and tried) but can't seem to figure it out. I'm a "step by step" type of girl. thanks!

Leslie aka StoreyBook Reviews that is pretty neat....it won't necessarily be something I use because I don't always have an order in which I read things. If I know I'm going to read it next I'll add it to my currently reading shelf. But I still love it when you add new features like this!

Plus I don't know how I would reorder my nearly 300 books! LOL

message 17: by Diane (new)

Diane Hi Vitalinew - thank you for the Step by Step instructions. Got it! Now let's see if I can stick to the order before buying any more LOL

I read the title and misinterpreted what it means...

Which brings me to a suggestion (I'll also post it in the suggestions forum):

Why not have an "auto-delivery" mechanism that you can setup through Amazon? Like, you get the book off the top of your to-read shelf every specified interval (2 weeks, a month, etc.) auto-purchased through your Amazon account [they store your CC info already]...

That would *really* make it like Netflix's queue.

whichwaydidshego Hey, I just tried to reorder my to-read shelf, and the ones I left blank are the ones that are visible on the shelf now, whereas the ones I thought would be reordered are nowhere to be found. Could you please explain this to me? How the heck do I fix it? (I tried going back and saving it that way to no avail... ergh!)

message 21: by Ceci (new)

Ceci Brilliant!! I have so many books on my to-read list that it indeed has become useless. Thanks!! Will try it out asap. :)

message 22: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Way to go Otis! I noticed you guys had added this feature a week or so ago and loved it! Thanks!

There's another way to get to that feature (that's the way I've been using it :)

1. Go to "my books"
2. Click on "to-read"
3. Click on "main" or "list" views
4. Place your cursor under the arrows in your order column. Two more options will pop up: 'move to top' and 'edit.' Click on edit.
5. Reorder your shelf
6. Click the reorder button when you're done to save your changes

Nora I'm sorry, but it may be because my computer is old: I cannot reorder my to-read list by message 11's or 23's instructions. In the first, there are three things that say "edit", under Shelves: To Read, Date Read, and the far right column next to the x's. None of these work for me. If I follow #23's instructions, I never see a "main" or "list" view. What am I doing wrong? star quilt
