Read with Kindle on Your Android or Fire Device? Now It's Easier to Share Your Reading on Goodreads! (U.S. Members)

Posted by Cybil on January 18, 2017
There are no faster or firmer friendships than those formed between people who love the same books.
Irving Stone, Clarence Darrow for the Defense

Talking about books with friends and discovering new books to read is the reason why Goodreads was created. And today, if you read with the Kindle app on your Android device or Fire tablet, we've made it even easier to add books to your Goodreads shelves and share what you're reading with your Goodreads friends! This follows the launch earlier this year of the same feature for members who read on Kindle for iOS.

You do the reading, we'll shelve it for you

With the latest update to the Kindle app for Android devices and Fire tablets, you'll have the option to automatically mark each book as "Currently Reading" when you start it and as "Read" when you finish. Just switch it on, and your Updates Feed will show your friends each time you start and finish reading a book in Kindle on Android and Fire devices. We believe books are better with friends, and this feature is another example of how we're making it easier for Goodreads members who read on Kindle to share and talk about the books they're reading.

Switch on, switch off—you decide

As always, we give you full control. Every time you start or finish a book, you have the ability to toggle this on or off. So it's easy to keep on for most of the books you read, switch off when you start a book you'd prefer to keep private, and turn back on whenever you're ready.

Use auto-update to nail your Reading Challenge!

Auto-update ensures that every Kindle book you read counts towards your challenge, so all you have to do is watch your progress bar move closer to your goal.

Now you'll never forget to add a book to your Reading Challenge goal!

How do I switch this on?

This feature is part of the latest update for the free Kindle for Android app (download here), and Kindle for Fire tablets (device will update automatically when connected to a network). To automatically add the books you read to your Goodreads shelves, follow these three steps:

1) Download the latest version of the free Kindle for Android app, to your Android device. Fire customers can check their Fire tablet is running the latest software by going to Settings > Device Options > System Updates, and then selecting "Check Now."

2) If you haven't already, link your Goodreads account to the app. To do this, click here and scroll to the Amazon section.

3) The next time you open a new book to read, a prompt will appear in About This Book asking if you would like to automatically mark your books as "Currently Reading." Set this to "On" and let the app update your bookshelves for you! You have the option of switching this off every time you start a book.

Can I add my book to custom shelves in Kindle for Android?

Not yet—today's launch allows you to add books to the three primary exclusive shelves (Want to Read, Currently Reading, and Read) from inside the Kindle for Android app and Kindle on Fire tablets. You can always add a book to one of your custom shelves in the Goodreads apps or on the desktop site.

What about people who read on Kindle outside of the United States?

Today, this feature is only available to US members. Our goal is to make this available to all Goodreads members who read on Kindle, but we don't have specific timing to share.

Kaethe Fair warning: if you turn this feature on, the automatic update to currently reading will supersede any prior read date you might have in. For the many of us who have been begging for a way to track multiple reads, this is actually destructive to our data.

Elyse Cool but I don't think I'll turn it on.

Hi Kaethe! If you've already got a review on the site, or just a date read, the auto-update shouldn't interact with it in any way, at least automatically. Instead of the "Mark as currently reading?" prompt, it'll just show you what you have the book shelved as on Goodreads. You'd then need to manually set this to currently reading, and even then it won't replace any information until you're done reading the book and choose to manually write another review.

If your experience has differed from this at all, feel free to write in to support(at)goodreads(dot)com, and we'd be happy to take a closer look.

I have the same issue as Kaethe. I have two re-reads from this year alone. And both times I tried updating, my dates were changed to this year. Which, if I hadn't overshot my reading challenge (by an ungodly amount), would've made my reading challenge not met.

Becca Jacquin I'm excited to see this feature come to android!

message 9: by Patsy (new)

Patsy Is this up-date not available for the first generation of Kindle Fire HD 8.9? It is getting really old that none of the GoodReads up-dates for Kindle Fire ever works for the first generation. No way am I getting rid of a perfectly good Kindle just to have these up-dates Amazon!

Angela Auten I'm not a Kindle fan at all. I have a Nook and it is so much better than the Kindle in my opinion. If you are going to do this for Kindle you may as well do it for Barnes and Noble Nook devices as well.

Blue Is overdrive next? Pretty please? I've already gone through 18 books just in 2017 through overdrive.

message 13: by Booklover (new)

Booklover This is a great feature. It would be even better if I could automatically mark my reading progress from the about this book section. I like to update page number or percentage and being able to tap the progress and have it automatically update on Goodreads would be fantastic.

Hi Amara, it's best to please write in to support(at)goodreads(dot)com so we can investigate.

Patsy wrote: "Is this up-date not available for the first generation of Kindle Fire HD 8.9?"

Hi Patsy! The update is not compatible with the first generation of Kindle Fire, unfortunately. I'm very sorry about this.

Blue wrote: "Is overdrive next? Pretty please? I've already gone through 18 books just in 2017 through overdrive."

We have no plans to integrate Overdrive, but I've let our developers know you want this!

Thanks for the feedback — it's been passed on to our developers for consideration.

Katie The default on my iPad seems to keep turning the feature on even after I've turned the toggle off. I've had to physically correct my Goodreads through my books because my husband will use our Kindle to read books and we may or may not read the same ones.

I would like to be able to just plain keep it turned off.

To avoid this, you can always change the edition you're reading. I have books listed multiple times because I've read them multiple times, I just use different editions each time. For example, on Goodreads list the hardcover edition the first time, and then the paperback edition the second time.

I would LOVE to see this integrated in with OverDrive as well. It's what all the libraries use, so it'd be nice to have it work with Goodreads.

Yeah, but Amazon owns Goodreads. It's easy for them to add the integration. It's not certain that other companies want to help out.

Thanks for the feedback Shaun. Do you know why none of the updates for GoodReads/Kindle Fire work for the first generation? So many people jumped on the bandwagon when Kindle Fire first came out & now we are all stuck with a Fire tablet that is never included in the so called upgrades. It almost feels like Amazon is trying to force us to buy another tablet in order to take advantage of the upgrades. Actually not almost...that is exactly how it feels. If you ask me it is pretty sad that Amazon is ignoring so many loyal customers by not making the upgrades available to the first generation Fire tablet owners. My next tablet may very well be an IPad or Nook if that is the way Amazon is going to treat loyal customers.

I dropped my first gen kindle this past july and cracked the screen. :( After seeing the price to purchase a new kindle (much lower than when the first gen was initially released) I decided to just purchase a new one. I love all the new updates that the newer gen kindle provides. So compatible and convenient with goodreads!

Nevermind ... It's there. You just have to click "add to Goodreads shelf" and then it gives you an option to click "currently reading".

message 30: by Kris (new)

Kris All I see is Amazon wanting my to switch my Login to them.. um I don't freakin think so...

message 31: by Joy (new)

Joy I am not a big fan when it pops up near the end of the book and is automatically switched to mark it as read. It's fine if you catch the button in time, but sometimes I press the back button without thinking about it.

Then I have to get on the website, take it off read, and then eventually relog it as read anyways. It's annoying. I wish there was a way to put it so it auto assumes I didn't finish the book.

(And if you're wondering why it's an issue - it is because I do a bunch of challenges and I mark books as read when I'm ready to log a few at once. It's just easier to track since I read a lot every week)

message 32: by Kris (last edited Jan 19, 2017 08:02PM) (new)

Kris DO NOT update if you're using an Acer tablet. I can no longer see what page I am on and how long the book is. All I get is that Location XYZ of some ridiculously large number nonsense that means absolutely nothing. I will be hunting a way to remove this nasty not-an-update from my system.

message 33: by Gertie (new)

Gertie Thanks for another useful update!

I got to use this last night. :-) However, I must say that I am missing the ability to mark something as read and immediately get a rating/review dialog (on Goodreads only, not Amazon) so I think I may stick with the Goodreads site for now, unless I don't plan to rate or review something and simply want to mark it Read.

I'll stay tuned for future developments!

message 34: by Blue (new)

Blue Shaun - Sweet! Thank you.

Odd question: Have you had issues with profiles listing 'read' or 'currently reading' books as 'want to read'? I noticed a week or two ago that I submitted a review but on my profile (not 'my Books', that was correct) it would show I reviewed the book but the status with the dropdown would have 'want to read'. I just noticed it is doing the same for 'currently reading', putting them in the 'currently reading' section but beside them is the 'want to read' status.

Is it maybe trying to use different editions of the same book? That happens to me a lot, I'll add a book I already had in my TBR as Currently Reading on the app which takes the first edition listed so if the other edition in my TBR is a different edition, I have one in TBR and one Currently Reading. I have to go on the site (can't change editions on Android app grr) and uncheck the wrong edition.

The odd part is it is on my profile because I typed a review, so by design it ought to pull from the same edition I reviewed, not pull the review from one edition and the status from another. Hmmm maybe though, as the status is a dynamic element. It is relatively new as a problem; it originally did not seem to be an issue.

message 37: by Jan C (new)

Jan C I often have to check my duplicates from "My Books". For whatever reason, sometimes a second will open when it was not intended to open.

message 38: by Kaethe (new)

Kaethe An update

3) The next time you open a new book to read, a prompt will appear in About This Book asking if you would like to automatically mark your books as "Currently Reading." Set this to "On" and let the app update your bookshelves for you! You have the option of switching this off every time you start a book.

So yesterday evening on the bus I opened a book to see if I wanted to read it. A prompt did not appear asking if I would like to automatically add books to "Currently Reading" although there was a line about adding this book to Currently Reading with a slider to the right. It was set to "on". It wouldn't move to "off". I tried for more than five minutes. This was just a test to see if it was working as described. I'd call it a miserable failure. I'm certainly not going to open any book I've previously read and risk having that data obliterated. I'm weirdly proprietorial towards my data, and having it erased makes me wrathful.

message 39: by Sally (new)
