15 Benefits of Being Friends with a Book Nerd

Posted by Hayley on December 12, 2015

Books are undoubtedly awesome, but so are the people who love them. We asked on Facebook and Twitter: What's a benefit of being friends with a book nerd? (Goodreads members are basically experts on the topic, after all.) Check out our favorite answers below!

1. "You know about SO MANY great books. All. The. Time." (@sqq100)

2. "Lots of wonderful late-night talks about books and how fun reading is." (Katie Morrissey)

3. "You can know that they REALLY want to be your friend. Most book nerds don't have time for casual friendships and, generally speaking, would rather be spending their free time with fictional people than real people. If a book nerd wants to spend time with you, that's the greatest compliment you can get." (Faye Lilley)

4. "Free grammar corrections." (@bart_carter)

5. "They don't talk when you're reading. They just pick up their book." (Michelle Vollers)

6. "Help to avoid bad books." (Damian McMillan)

7. "You read books that are outside of your comfort zone. You're no longer stuck in one genre." (@RitaHumola)

8. "Victorian comebacks and random quotations." (@livesingularity)

9. "Every time you visit their house, you have pretty bookshelves to look at!" (@profsslockhart)

10. "You'll have someone to book shop with who won't rush you!" (Diana Rivero)

11. "Unending supply of new words to use in regular conversations." (@iCoder1978)

12. "Always knowing what the movie adaptation left out." (@veragfischer)

13. "They're easy to shop for." (Denise Lacombe)

14. "Book swapping. I love it when this happens: 'I found this on my bookcase and thought you would like it.'" (Lucy Hutchinson)

15. "They understand you." (@AngelaRoquemore)

Are there really only fifteen benefits of being friends with a book nerd? Of course not! Tell us more in the comments.

Not my book geek friend. I periodically do a sweep of her bookshelf only to have her say - oh it was YOU who lent me that. Too many books coupled with a memory like a seine net... I still love her though ☺️

I'm guilty of this one in particular:
"Unending supply of new words to use in regular conversations."

I avoid this one at all cost:
"Book swapping. I love it when this happens: 'I found this on my bookcase and thought you would like it.'"

**Unless it's a kindle edition I'm loaning this pop back up after the exceeded time limit. LOVE THAT FEATURE!!

Yes. All the time. Also AVPM terms because you can only analyze HP so many times ;)

message 120: by Chami (new)

Chami You can exchange books with them. That way you can come across interesting books that you can't find all by yourself. And itz really easy to spend time with them, especially when you are reading a book. Cuz they will never disturb you as they also inderstand how important it is to be lost in the story with the characters in the story. They will help you to escape the real world for a while with your book, something that not all friends can do.

Igy The Book Hermit Shaannaa wrote: "Never judge a book by its cover"
True that and they change covers with each press.

Igy The Book Hermit I can remember in high school not many people reading and then after that, it was mostly Star Wars or Forgotten Realms. I was in a Sci-Fi book club with maybe 6 members that fell apart due to lack of interest. Then Harry Potter & The Lord of the Rings came out and I would have high schoolers asking me about books at the stores. It went from no kid wanted to read to now they all read. Now we only have 1 new bookstore in the area and I am the one asking about books. It is nice to know someone else who likes to read the things you do. I hope it will always be that way. I own 2 Kindles, but I still love being at a book store and talking with other people about our favorite books.

message 129: by Beth (new)

Beth Carpenter I understand how you feel Kevin. I was the kid in high school who always had a book with them. No matter what was being taught in school I would always have a book with me.
Kids didn't really look forward to reading assigned books in English class, but I did because I knew I would enjoy whatever the teacher assigned.
Yes I was that book nerd in school and I still am that book nerd and proud of it.

Sarina Beth wrote: "...Yes I was that book nerd in school and I still am that book nerd and proud of it."
Well, being a book nerd should be a coolness criteria. :D
Hmm, assigned books (or, in my case, Textbooks with stories) could sometimes be really what I looked forward to, at times.

message 133: by Piper (new)

Piper I'm sort of the book nerd myself so... I guess that they understand my total geek outs and fangirlings. They under stand when I die in my room and they just cry with me. Yep, I have no life.

message 134: by AnaChris (new)

AnaChris They understand about wider range of emotions and because they have read about every kind of emotion through the words on pages and in proses....they give you a unique and deep perspective. Even if they have not personally experienced an emotion, they understand it because they have lived it through the books they read. Infact, they can possibly understand you better than anyone else.

That is terribly sad AnaChris. Great that books helped but terrible your friends didn't. My suggestion is get a dog. The best most loyal and non-judgemental friend anyone can ever have. I have 2 which makes me very lucky.

message 144: by AnaChris (new)

AnaChris Thanks for your good wishes Jen...
I am in much better shape now : I remind myself of good things in life everyday and my family is very supportive of me. I found that if you find something that keeps you engaged - it is very helpful in restoring the balance. I do and learn a lots of things these days. In the end, as the books say, loving yourself is most important thing in life. :)

message 145: by Susan (new)

Susan Reader Never at a loss for words. Book nerds are highly verbal and our powers of self expression are well honed, exquisite, precise.

Igy The Book Hermit I don't have friends that are not book nerds. I have no use for some one who doesn't read. They don't think like a reader and don't understand things a book nerd will.
