20 Problems Only Book Lovers Understand

Posted by Hayley on November 13, 2015

Last week we asked on Facebook and Twitter: What's a problem only book lovers understand? We got over 1,000 amazing responses! So even if non-book lovers don't get your struggle, remember—you're among friends here.

1. "The urge to buy books even though you still have too many books to read at home." (Rie VdWarth)

2. "Feeling sad for people who don't really exist." (Kimberly Moniz)

3. "RUNNING OUT OF SHELF SPACE!!!" (Kim)

4. "Getting interrupted when you are on the last few pages of a book." (Sobe Daya)

6. "Wanting every book in a library section but knowing it is impossible to read all of them." (Richard Azia)

7. "Waiting so long for a sequel that you forget what happened in the first book." (Jessica Luong)

8. "When you're lying in bed and it's all cold in your room—and the hand holding the book freezes to death, even though the rest of you is warm under the blankets." (Alina Marie Swan)

9. "Finishing a book and having to wait a whole year to read the next in the series." (Sarah Scanion)

10. "Trying to keep the book dry while reading in the bath." (Patricia Boland)

11. "Ordering a book online and getting the book with the movie cover. A book with a movie cover just doesn't feel the same." (Anna RN)

13. "When someone borrows your book and doesn't return it for ages!" (Pallavi B)

14. "Deciding. Which. Book. To. Read. First." (Monique Balsamo)

15. "Getting to a 'can't stop reading' spot in the book and it's 3:00am." (Joan Chesley)

16. "When you have a book with you, but it's not the one you wanted to read right then." (Virginia Osborne)

17. "Being forced to stop reading by other obligations, but choosing to ignore those obligations. Then getting in trouble." (Feel Like Fangirling)

18. "Packing for a trip and never being able to bring enough books." (Erika Gallion)

19. "Having a book fall on your face because you're reading on your back while holding the book up." (Manuel Cedillo)

20. And the ultimate book lovers' dilemma: "So many books, so little time." (Navy Reading)

~♡Nujaba♡~ Heres another one: Letting someone borrow your book but when they return the book to you, its been all spoilt and tacky! (gosh! I hate when that happens!)

message 707: by Sanket (new)

Sanket I have faced all of them............add this one too -> Family members say that 'you are not allowed to read any book this week' as punishment. That's worse than most other issues.

message 708: by Augustine (new)

Augustine Kobayashi With the sole exception of 10, all of them is me. I might add, the only reason I've got kindle is because I no longer have any shelf space left.

message 709: by Vikas (new)

Vikas Everything in this list is me of course, every reader can relate.

I have used thick books as pillow to sleep on few occasions when I became too sleepy to continue reading.

This is kind of true! You feel separated and wonder if they read the same book as you... You can't participate in conversations bc no one wants to hear how the book they loved, sucked. :(

message 729: by Leovaldoalberto (new)

Leovaldoalberto Sometimes I got a great cup of coffee, waiting the moment to a little reading stop it went cold.

message 730: by Magda (new)

Magda Basically all of the above.

message 731: by Janet (new)

Janet Martin So many absolutely perfect comments! And you can solve both #16 and 18 on the original article with a digital reader of some kind--I have several including my iPhone and a Kobo Mini in my purse, so there's always a good variety close at hand and I don't have to pack 15 lbs of books in my suitcase.

Audiobooks can help with some of the other issues folks have mentioned. And as far as hating something someone else loves--never doubt your own taste!!!!

message 732: by Naomi (new)

Naomi Knight #15 all the way. Once I start everything is secondary. This includes the re-read. Great list!

message 733: by LauraT (new)

LauraT Many of those I've solved by my ereader!!! At least I bring hundreds of books on holiday!

message 734: by Meg (new)

Meg I'd add refusing to get an electronic reader cause real books smell too frikin good!

message 735: by Lori (new)

Lori Ownby I can completely understand #5! Sometimes a book is so good that I just can't move on to another book immediately. I'm still thinking of the characters and the story. It's almost like it's disrespectful to move on to another book right away. I know, I'm such a book nerd! haha!

message 738: by Tina (new)

Tina All of them are true :D :)

+you go to bookshop and find amazig books, but you dont have enough money at the moment, so you must choose some of them...

Janet Martin Meg wrote: "I'd add refusing to get an electronic reader cause real books smell too frikin good!"

Glad you have a good nose--just remember how infrequently library books are cleaned in any way. And I hope you have a good back, too, because that 15 lbs of books I mentioned originally used to be the real deal in any suitcase I packed for more than a couple of days. I still like "real" books, but for portable purposes, give me that 4 oz Kobo Mini that has nearly 1000 titles on it.

message 740: by Umar (last edited Nov 16, 2015 09:50AM) (new)

message 741: by Cristi-Lael (new)

Cristi-Lael beautywithbooks wrote: "And when waiting for someone, i pray to make them late so that i can get few more minutes to read the book."

Oh, golly, yes. I love finding out I have to wait a few extra minutes so that I can get in more reading time. And it's the best reading time because I don't have to feel guilty about not doing homework/housework/interacting with my family. I just wish it lasted longer, because invariably the friend will show up right when I'm getting to a good part in the book.

I love that scene from Gilmore Girls with her smelling the book. I hadn't given the smell of books a lot of thought before but since seeing that scene I occasionally smell my books too. Some smell better than others.

I agree about having a preference for having an actual book to read from instead of reading from a gadget.
