Goodreads Transitions to New Data Sources

Posted by Otis Chandler on January 30, 2012
We're happy to announce that Goodreads has reached a new milestone: We are no longer dependent on Amazon for book information. Ingram, the largest wholesaler of books in the U.S., is our new primary data partner, and our agreement with them will ensure accurate and reliable information for the foreseeable future. In addition to Ingram, we are working with dozens of other open data sources, such as libraries, to find book records from all over the world (see below for a list). This is an exciting moment, and we're confident that this change will be better for the members of Goodreads and long-term success of the site.

What has changed? Not as much as you might think.
Fewer than 2 percent of our 7 million users have books currently affected. However, you may notice some missing cover images. We are still in the process of importing millions of images from several sources, so please be patient—most of those images will be back very soon.

Today, 99 percent of the transition to new data sources is now complete. For the remaining 1 percent of books without new sources, book records may appear blank: listed as "Unknown Title" and "Unknown Author." Once we've found a new source of data for those books, they will be restored. Please be assured that all of your reviews and ratings will continue to be available during the transition.

What can I do right now?
Here's what you can do to help make the switch as smooth as possible:

If you see a blank book record—one listed as "Unknown Title" and "Unknown Author"—and you know what book it is (for example, if you reviewed the book and can recognize it from your review), please report it in the Goodreads Librarians Group or apply to become a Librarian yourself. If you're a librarian and you see a blank book record that you can identify, please feel free to enter new information using one of the approved sources listed in this post.

If you see a book missing a cover, feel free to find a new one on the author's or publisher's Web site and upload it to Goodreads. While many of the missing cover images will be included very soon in our ongoing imports, we also welcome book information from Goodreads members.

Why did we do this?
Quality book information—such as titles, authors, publication dates, and cover images—is the life blood of a site dedicated to book discovery and literary discussion. Since its inception, Goodreads has relied on Amazon's public API for much of this information, and while Amazon data was free, it came with many restrictions. For instance, we couldn't use their information for our mobile apps or link to competing bookstores. If you have any additional questions about the transition, please feel free to contact us.

We'd like to say a big thank you to the many Goodreads Librarians and Goodreads Authors who have worked tirelessly to help with the transition over the past few weeks. Thank you again for continuing to make Goodreads the amazing and unique place it is. We look forward to providing you with the best, most accurate, and most all-encompassing book database in the world for many years to come.

Authors and Publishers, would you like to be a source?
We are very proud of the enormous community of authors on the site, and keeping your book information accurate has always been a priority of ours. We are most likely already importing a feed of data for your books (either from Ingram or directly from your publisher), but if you would like to confirm this, or offer us a feed of data to ensure that your books will always be available to the millions of readers on Goodreads, please contact us.

Jeffrey Michael My first book, and only book so far, is no longer recognized by either title or cover. My author's page shows no books so how can I promote from GR now? I really enjoy this community of readers and authors but I think you've taken a major step backwards with this move. You didn't just divorce yourself from relying on Amazon but totally disassociated your site from it.

rivka Jeffrey, as the author, you have the right to the title, cover, and so on of your book. You can rescue your book, or ask for help doing so in the Goodreads Librarians group.

P.A. Wilson So how do I know that my books will be available here. I'm an indie author and I don't see anything on the list that looks familiar. If I'm only publishing through Amazon, Createspace and Smashwords, will my books be unavailable here?

I don't really have time to go digging through my records to try to identify which books match the numbers of the missing books. Can I just go get them again?

I know you are busy, but I've tried searching for my books by ISBN and no results come up so it seems like indie authors are not going to be able to list their books here.

If that's the case, I would like to know so I can spend my time on sites that will let me list my books.

Thanks

Tina Somehow the title & author of my book recommendation & that m reading is gone-ive tryed every thing but I cant seem to get access to put the title & author back on it-how do i do this?

message 55: by Ethan (new)

Ethan Someone mentioned that their French language books are missing. Same thing happened with the Japanese language books. Do you need a Japanese book DB? I can look for one. Might take me a while though.

Why not include Amazon as one of the sources along with the others? Then only attempt a search from Amazon if you get no hits in the other databases.

message 56: by Alexandre (new)

Alexandre Indeed, a dozen of French language books from my shelves were simply deleted from the goodreads database (ISBN not found). My reviews were automatically switched to another edition.

I've already fixed the books I own, but I hope international sources will be added.

message 57: by James (new)

James many of my 'read' books are missing the number pages they contain including very recently published editions. I had not noticed this issue before so it may have always been there. Is this issue likley to be fixed?

message 58: by Natascha (new)

Natascha 30% of my books are missing their cover. There are some completely unknown books in my library with no identifying information at all - except for my own tags. A lot of the changes I made as librarian seem to have been reversed/overwritten.
I always took great care in uploading covers and adding missing information. It's really disappointing that some of that is now lost.

message 59: by Iris (new)

Iris Goodreads doesn't recognize any of my books on Austrian law from MANZ (publisher) anymore, as well as the KODEX series (legal texts, published by LexisNexis). I haven't tried books published by Springer yet.
This is annoying – I'd like to keep track of those books via the app so I know which editions I have at home. :/

Anton Shevtsov My book collection is lost.
More than 50% books covers\descriptions\other fields is lost. Many covers from other editions..
I am not happy..

alyssa jackman What of you have a book that doesn't have a cover and you don't know what it is and there's not data when you click on it? I'm guessing it's going to come back like the article says?

John Ford Should we keep using Goodreads ?

A number (if not all) of the French books on my shelves still haven't been added to the new database.

I can't possibly add all of them manually. In my eyes, most of the interest of Goodreads actually lay in the fact that it relied on comprehensive and up-to-date external databases (such as Amazon's) so that finding almost any book and adding it to your collection was quite straightforward and effortless. If we have to do everything on our own now, I'm not sure there's a point in using Goodreads anymore :/

It's been 6 months since the big "transition" : not much has changed in the interim as far as I'm concerned. Should we keep waiting or...

An honest answer would be much appreciated !

message 63: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Frederich I would like to submit cover images for all the titles I have published. I can send them to Goodreads in format and size you would like. Just let me know how to do it, or elsre this site does not work for me.

message 64: by Chantal (new)

Chantal Bellehumeur I am SO glad to have found the explanation as to why my book cover have disappeared!!! It looked so much better when they were all there. I am having trouble restoring them, but hopefully I will figure it out. I am hoping to attract more readers who will post reviews. =) Chantal Bellehumeur

Letande D'Argon The sad thing is that even though this blog entry was posted more than a year ago, there's still a lot of broken entries in database. And covers isn't a biggest problem. Some entries was destroyed completely and there's a lot of entries without ISBN, title, description, covers, or even user's comments / reviews. Without ANYTHING that can help to identify the edition. Of course, librarians will help. People like me just can't stand broken entries and lack of covers / info and ready to kill days to fix as much stuff as possible. But there's one thing I want to ask, GoodReads. And the thing is - no more changes like this, please. It's a disaster and even though a lot of librarians worked hard this whole year, we still can't fix everything that was broken. If you move something, make sure that previous entries will be safe. We don't need another disaster like this.
