Goodreads Editors Get Bossy about Book Recommendations

Posted by Cybil on December 1, 2025

It's the end of the year, a notoriously slow time in the publishing industry, so your devoted editorial team here at Goodreads has lined up something a little different (e.g., more unhinged than usual) for this month's editors' picks column.

We've dug into our own personal book stacks to sort out a selection of recommendations for loyal readers. These include actual stacks—real books on our own real shelves—as well as some of the many, many, many stacks crowding our brains at any given time.

We’ve got some quick recommendations for new books in December, plus several more categories looking both forward and back. If you’ve ever wondered which books we recommend over and over again, or which incredibly specific micro-genres we have on auto-add—why, just scroll down below.

Think of these as a kind of informal “thank you” from our book-addled brains to yours. Click on the cover images for more information about each title, and use the Want to Read button to add any interesting ideas to your own aspirational bookshelf. Also, if you’re in the market for gift-giving ideas, make sure to scroll all the way to the bottom. Thanks! Happy Reading! Happy New Year!
