A Century of New Historical Fiction Reading

Posted by Cybil on February 2, 2025

Now that we’re a quarter of the way into the 21st century—that’s still hard to believe—it can be interesting to ponder our various perspectives on the previous century.

One way to go about that, if you’re a bookworm, is to seek out stories and novels set in a particular decade of the 20th century. That’s the idea behind today’s collection, in which Goodreads’ ace editorial staff wades into the stacks to assemble a century of historical fiction, sorted by decade.

The books below span a wide range of genres—some even live in between genres—and are sequenced chronologically by decade, according to when the initial or the main action of the story takes place.

That’s the when. As to where, you’ll find lots of potential destinations: an Irish hospital circa 1918. A downtown apartment in 1950s Tehran. A one-room cabin in 1973 Alabama. You’ll find a procession of accomplished authors here, too, including Isabel Allende, Hernan Diaz, Jonathan Franzen, Kristin Hannah, Han Kang, James McBride, Silvia Moreno-GarciaOlga Tokarczuk, Amor Towles, and Colson Whitehead.

These selections are, of course, just a sliver of the available books set in the various decades of the 20th century. But it’s a fun way to look back again via historical fiction. If you see any interesting leads for future reading, click the Want to Read button to add a book to your aspirational shelf.

Tanu In Memoriam is crushing.

Debi What a jolt to realize that we are a quarter through this century! As an "old person" still kind of stuck in the 70's and 80's, and who thought I don't really like historical fiction, it was eye opening to see that books set in the 1990's are considered historical fiction. I think I need to expand my horizons and not let genre labels dictate my choices!

Btw, I have read some good books recently set in the first half of the 20th century. One of those was Relative Fortunes. I just need to see the description to pique my interest before the label.

Share the sentiment completely, such a shock to see 1990 in historical fiction section! Where did all the time go...

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* With my personal shelving, I consider historical to be much older, and in 50's, 60's time just label it' Retro as an older modern times. I definitely can't consider 90's historical in 2025 with how I view it

message 7: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Greene It's all historical for my age group being born in 2000 I don't remember anything before 2003 or so even 9/11 is historic to me sadly

message 8: by Nicola (new)

Nicola What a fantastic selection, very usefully curated. Unfortunately, it seems that humankind has already forgotten what it did to itself in the two world wars, so we need books like these to uncover the step-by-step, blow-by-blow events and social and political movements that took us there, and will take us there again.

Naomi's Novels Anything during and before the '20s is my favourite time period.

message 10: by Maria (new)

Maria Dellaporta Books that are set in the 90s are historical fiction?!? That's it, I am ancient. Going to dig myself a grave and wait for death.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I thought historical fiction was usually defined as written 50 or more years after the event or time period. That said, I'm older than nearly all of you and I'm happy to peruse these titles, even the more recent ones.

And a note: I usually skip these editorials/lists from GR because I'd rather read older books where the writing style is more to my taste. I was glad to see the banner for this genre.

Helen Highly recommend the Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters, my favorite read of last year!

My thinking exactly! In my mind, it is always "just yesterday".

message 19: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn I have purchased 15 of these novels and have only read 5 of them. Historical fiction is my genre of choice.

message 20: by Kat (new)

Kat As a person and as a scholar I see historical fiction as anything set before 1945. Anything after that is modern literature. Todays marketing is messing with our heads.

message 21: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Brotherless Night is beautiful and shocking, I listened to the audiobook which was very well-read.

message 22: by Asa (new)

Asa I saw some comments shocked how books written 1990s are considered as historical fiction. :) (I was born in 21st century so 1990s were practically historical period)

I have pretty same view on this though, even if I was born in early 21st century. I thought everything after 1960s is not old, and a lot of time I consider things are old if they were happening before 1900.

But I think fiction written in 1990s time setting could be called as historical fiction, as long as it uses historical events/people (I don't know, I'm not a writer). In Indonesia, there's a well-known book by Leila Chudori, The Sea Speaks His Name that took place/time before and around Indonesia's 1998 Reformation.

Probably it also depends on the country's historical timeline (Indonesia is so young, so I think it makes sense), and also depends by the definition of "contemporary history".

Mansi I have 2 books among this in my WTR- The Henna artist ,and The heaven and earth grocery store.
I hope they are good.

Holocaust books are usually set in the 1940s because World War II started in 1939. There are several fantastic books that deal with this subject from many different viewpoints. Two I can think of off the top of my head are Between Shades of Grey and Sarah’s Key. The one in this list is We Were the Lucky Ones.

message 37: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Can we please get a list of ACTUAL historical fiction that doesn't take place in the last 100 years? like maybe 1300s-1800s? every time good reads puts out a historical fiction list, all of the books are set so recently.

Have you read Under the Java Moon? It's WWII and about the Japanese prison camps in Indonesia (then called the Dutch East Indies). It's the experience of the Dutch people who were imprisoned. The book is excellent, and a part of WWII history that I knew nothing about.

message 40: by Liv (new)

Liv The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store
This was incredible. As someone from the Philadelphia area, it was partially horrifying to read about events that likely could have happened so close to home. While not a very long read, I cared so much for Dodo and hoped he could finally catch a break. The themes in this novel were necessary and profound; I will definitely reread this one.

message 41: by Dodi (new)

I finished Isola by Allegra Goodman last week. It's set in the 16th century, and it was excellent.

Yep I very much agree with this. There are lots of great authors writing historical fiction set before the 20th century yet they never get mentioned by GR. Even when Bernard Cornwell (who is considered by many historical fiction fans and writers as one of the greats of the genre) published his last Saxon Stories book GR didn't say a peep about it.

Also as far as what is considered historical fiction. Imo if it's within my living memory as a 39 year old and within my baby boomer parents' living memory then it's not historical fiction. Historical fiction isn't generally something that a large proportion of the current population lived through or heard about from their parents, as far as I'm concerned.

Well this is supposed to be the last one hundred years but there is plenty of historical fiction that is what you're looking for, this list just isn't for you

message 45: by Galicius (new)

Galicius I am astounded by how much time has slipped away. I had always imagined that a hundred years ago was in the 19th Century, but it's startling to realize that it was much more recent!

I really liked both The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka's Journey by Heather Morris.

message 48: by Karla (new)

Karla Love the organization by twentieth-century decades. Thanks for posting!

message 49: by james baker (new)

james baker very few of these books managed to get even a 4 on the Goodreads scale - interesting. Also they seem to be preoccupied with women's experiences and family dynasties so I guess that's what sells. Oh for some hard historical fiction from eg the Middle Ages !

message 50: by Katy (new)

Katy Just sitting here processing the idea that books set in the 1990s are considered historical fiction.
