Goodreads on your NOOK Color

Posted by Kyusik Chung on April 25, 2011

We're thrilled to announce that the Goodreads app is available for free on your NOOK Color. Our app makes the NOOK Color the most social ereader available! We love making Goodreads portable and accessible, because it is our core belief that a book comes alive when its ideas can be shared. (Also, try out our iPhone app, and an Android app is coming soon.)

The newly launched NOOK app store is part of a major update to the NOOK Color. It carries free apps like Goodreads and other apps for purchase. You can read more from Barnes & Noble about the update here and here.

When Barnes & Noble approached us about building a Goodreads app for the NOOK, we were flattered to learn that Goodreads was one of the more requested apps by NOOK owners. So, we put our noses to the grindstone to make sure we had an app ready for the launch of the store.

With this first version of the Goodreads app for NOOK, you can:

  • Check updates from your friends and those you follow
  • Manage your bookshelves
  • Rate and review books you've read
  • Read reviews from friends and the Goodreads community
  • View author profiles
  • Search for books

We're excited that we're not the only fans of the Goodreads app on NOOK. Aside from the enthusiastic team at Barnes & Noble, James Patterson gave us a thumbs up:

I've always been a fan of Goodreads, and how you can browse your friends' bookshelves. It's exciting to watch the NOOK Color grow from a great place to read into this new idea, which is almost like social reading. My fans can see I'm reading everything from Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken to those Alex Rider kids' books — I like a wide range.

If you own a NOOK Color, we hope that you check out the Goodreads app.
Tell us what you think – please rate and review the app!

Also, don't forget to indicate that you own a NOOK Color (make sure you're logged in, then click on the "own reader" link).

And if you're trying to figure out which ereader to purchase, we think the NOOK Color just earned itself another big selling point.

Katharine Oh, my! You have made my day! I love Goodreads and I adore my Nook Color -- this is perfect, thank you so much!

message 2: by Kyusik (new)

Kyusik Chung Glad to make your day, Katharine! Please don't forget to rate and review the app once you've started using it.

message 3: by Jason (new)

Jason I know you have limited resources to devote to non-essential projects... but I'd BUY a Goodreads Kindle app for my Kindle. Just saying... ;)

Katharine I just rated it - 5 stars from me. :)

For anyone who's wondering, I do not work for B&N: I'm just an avid reader who loves using technology to access and discuss books.

Wanda Where can I find the app? I just got a Nook Color, and I am dying to update my Goodreads shelves on the go!

Never mind: found it when I installed the update!

I'm having trouble finding the place where I can indicate the date read. I see where I can add a book to a shelf, add a review, and rate the book, but no place to add a date.

message 6: by Kelli (new)

Kelli Will this be available on the non-color Nook?

message 7: by Robert (new)

Robert Hi Wanda!

First, let's make sure your NOOK Color is up-to-date. The version they just released today that includes the NOOK Apps shop is 1.2.0. Barnes & Noble explains how to see what version you have and how to update your NOOK Color at this web page and in the "NOOK Apps" video on this page.

Barnes & Noble will also require you to have a credit card on file with your Barnes & Noble account even though our app is free!

Once your NOOK Color is up-to-date, here's how to get the Goodreads app:
1. Tap the Quick Nav Arrow (the arrow on the screen just above the 'n' Home button). You may have to press the Home button first if you don't see the Quick Nav Arrow.
2. Tap on 'apps'
3. Tap on 'Discover More NOOK Apps' near the top
4. Tap on 'Search Shop' at the bottom
5. Type "goodreads" and then tap 'Search'. You should see our app; it's the one with the 'g' logo =)
6. Tap 'Free', and again on 'Confirm', and our app will be downloaded and installed on your NOOK Color!

Any time you want use the Goodreads app, tap the Quick Nav Arrow, then 'apps', then on our icon!

Enjoy!

Carlissa Love the GR app on my Nook! It was the first app I installed. I will definitely rate it 5 stars!

message 9: by Chara (new)

Chara I have owned a NOOKcolor for a few months now and I've been looking forward to the launch of the app store (specifically a goodreads app).

I've got to say though, I'm really disappointed! I expected you to give me so much more!

The only thing I was REALLY looking forward to was being able to add a quote directly from my ebook to my goodreads profile. Is there any way you can add this function? NOOKcolor already comes with a facebook app that can do this, so I would assume its possible.

I would say that if you added this one function, I'd be satisfied. But it will take a little for me to be impressed.

I work at a major retail bookstore and I know the customers would also love this. I would love to suggest the goodreads app to customers, but right now the app really doesn't do the goodreads site any justice at all. I think that if someone's first introduction to goodreads was through the app, they wouldn't find it useful and would never really use the site. However, I have fallen in love with goodreads.com from the first day I started using it! I want to be able to share something impressive with customers.

message 10: by Chara (new)

Chara Kelli,

as far as I know, there is no date set for an app store to be available for the black & white NOOK. I would hope that would be included with the next update.

message 11: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan I don't have an e-reader yet but I've been considering getting one, and a Nook color has been one possibility. Having a Goodreads app for the Nook color is definitely nudging me in its direction!

message 12: by Nan (new)

Nan I have a nook wi-fi, not a nook color, but this announcement still makes me very happy. I have no plans to upgrade in the immediate future. However, I have thought that integration between goodreads as a social media and ebook readers is long overdue. I'm so glad to see that you've provided this application.

Jennifer Mccormick I want it for Kindle, too!

message 14: by Dorie (new)

Dorie Fantastic! It will be the first app I download. Love my Nookcolor.

message 15: by Gregory (new)

Gregory QUESTION:

I have a Rooted Nook Color. Basically this means that I stripped off the limiting Barnes and Noble software and installed a full version of Android Froyo, giving me full tablet capabilities.

So... how can I get the GoodReads app?

message 16: by Robert (new)

Robert For you Android users not on a NOOK, we've got something for you very soon! You could almost hold your breath (but please don't).

message 17: by Robert (new)

Robert Chara wrote: "The only thing I was REALLY looking forward to was being able to add a quote directly from my ebook to my goodreads profile."

Chara, we'd love that, too! But B&N hasn't given us any way to integrate with the NOOK, yet =( That Facebook functionality was built by B&N, and hopefully they'll allow us to do something similar, soon.

message 18: by Keith (new)

Keith Sheehan The app is a good start but it would be infinitely more useful if the app automatically recognized the books already on your device (both purchased and sideloaded) and allowed you to categorize them accordingly.

It is inconvenient at best to have to search for and then categorize books you have on the device when the app should perform those steps for you.

Additionally, it would be nice if there were a way to use the LendMe functionality of the NC through the Goodreads app.

Hope this helps.

message 19: by Ettore (last edited Apr 26, 2011 11:50AM) (new)

Ettore Pasquini Keith, to access the books on your Nook we will need APIs to do so, and only B&N can provide that. There might be more non-official ways to achieve it, but we'd rather not go there for now. Same thing for the LendMe functionality. The platform is very new, likely B&N will expand access to its features to 3rd parties.

message 20: by Keith (new)

Keith Sheehan Thanks for the reply. Hopefully B&N expands the API so that the features I mentioned and the ones others have mentioned can be added at some point in the future. Doing so would truly make the app killer.

Thanks for all your hard work thus far!

message 21: by LiteraryMarie (new)

LiteraryMarie Yay! I was hoping for a goodreads app on my NOOKColor.

BITE ME This is so amazing i love my nook color & absolutely adore goodreads

message 24: by Ravena (new)

Ravena James I was so glad to see this app when I got the download. I have already made it one of my go to apps on my homescreen. Thanks for making this such an intuitive and user friendly piece of tech.

message 25: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Any word on a goodreads HD app for the iPad?

message 26: by Jon (new)

Jon The app is a good start. I haven't rated it yet, because I only just bought a Nook Color this evening, so my learning curve is pretty steep right now.

Off the bat, I'm missing the ability to like a review. Also, would prefer to be able to quote to a status update while reading (like I would to Facebook or Twitter). Hopefully, the next version will include more features.

As I said, an excellent start for a first edition app. Thanks for the great work.

message 27: by Penelope (last edited May 07, 2011 07:56PM) (new)

Penelope I downloaded the app but am unable to install it :( It keeps giving me an error message...same with the other free app I downloaded.

edit: was finally able to install the app the day after downloading it. Not sure what the issue was but I'm glad it works!

message 28: by Chloe (new)

Chloe Hopefully a Kindle app will be coming soon, for some reason the way the goodreads site loads on the kindle browser it's impossible to update status or anything while on the kindle, which makes me sad.

message 29: by rivka (new)

rivka Chloe, are you using the full site or the mobile site?

message 30: by Phoebebb (new)

Phoebebb I put the app on my Nook color today and everything works except "My Books." Whenever I tap it I just get redirected to my apps. Is anyone else having this issue? Does anyone know how to fix this?

message 31: by Karlene (new)

Karlene Wish this came for the older nook, I am not about to buy another nook just to use this app.

message 32: by Katharine (new)

Katharine Karlene wrote: "Wish this came for the older nook, I am not about to buy another nook just to use this app."

You may wish to contact Barnes & Noble about that, as I don't believe the original Nook has an app store, yet. However, if you and others encourage them, maybe they'll add it. :)

message 33: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Best I own a Nook Color and was delighted to find out about this app! I tell people all the time about Good Reads and was getting on simply to search for some books. I just stumbled upon this post! Thank you for making yourself available to the Nook Color!

message 34: by Brianna (new)

Brianna aw! man, I have a kindle. I might end up getting nook anywhere, seeing is how amazon i have register to my kindle is on my mother's account.

message 36: by Phoebebb (new)

Phoebebb Is anyone else having issues with the"My Books" part? Whenever I select it, it just takes me back to my apps. Everything else is working fine though. I have it on my nook color.

message 37: by Chara (new)

Chara Phoebebb wrote: "Is anyone else having issues with the"My Books" part? Whenever I select it, it just takes me back to my apps. Everything else is working fine though. I have it on my nook color."

I havent had any problems with my nook color since the newest update.

I have heard a lot of people who deregiistered and reregistered their nook color to solve many different problems.

But if you deregister, you will lose any books/pictures/music you uploaded.

message 38: by Phoebebb (new)

Phoebebb Thanks Chara.

message 39: by Stacy Palm (new)

Stacy Palm I'd love it for my KINDLE.

message 41: by Cwoda (new)

Cwoda I love to read on my Nook but I find it totally aggravating when I'm trying to navigate on it. I just spent 30 minutes trying to figure out how to get to the Goodreads app and it hung up with the little spinning circle over and over again. It does not have good navigating instructions.

message 42: by Kit (new)

Kit WHOO HOO! I just found out about this app for my NC! I'm in LOVE! Thanks Goodreads!

Now... I do have a little problem (isn't that always the way?), and I've seen others post about it, but no responses to their posts.

When I tap on "My Books" it'll take me to a screen that says "goodreads" for about 2 seconds then takes me back to the screen to tap "My Books" again. A couple times it's taken me back to the actual Nook Apps screen. Maybe it's something they are working on??

Anyone else have this problem then have it corrected?

Other than that, so far, I'm lovin' that I can have my Goodreads on my NookColor!

message 43: by Mitzi (new)

Mitzi I too am having the trouble when I click on my books it always takes me back to my app screen :( Is there anything we can do to fix this or do we need to wait on you guys to fix it?

message 44: by Bill (new)

Bill Same problem here. Clicking My Books takes me back to the desktop on my NookColor. I tried powering completing off and restarting.

message 45: by Chara (new)

Chara Hey guys! I have a nook color and the good reads app and I havent had that trouble at all.

I know some people who have had trouble with their NC after the update. They de-registered and then re-registered their NC and the problems were solved.

the only problem is, that it wipes out anything you've loaded to your NC.

message 46: by Phoebebb (new)

Phoebebb I emailed goodreads and they replied that it was basically an issue they were aware of but didn't mention how soon it would be fixed.

I'm not too comfortable with the idea of re-registering my NC. One, because it sounds like a headache, and two, because I haven't actually talked to anyone who's done it and verified that it worked. It always seems to be people who have heard of others saying it worked.

I think I'm just going to wait for goodreads to anounce when the issue has been fixed. Can't wait!

message 47: by Chris (new)

Chris Duda Is there a way to get community updates when logged into the app? I have it on both my nook color and android phone and can see updates and book reviews from everyone when it loads but once I log in it only checks for updates from my friends.

message 48: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Wish this was available on the original nook! Sadly, it has become the "redheaded stepchild" and B&N only updates the NookColor anymore. The last update for the original nook was Nov 2010, and that only added shelves. The last (only) real update was February 2010 (The first nooks were shipped mid Dec 2009).

message 49: by Dámaris (new)

Dámaris Elisabet but the new color nook has LCD screen,no? I think it tired the eyes

I have downloaded the NOOK app for my Ipad and it works fine. I am wondering if this "new" Nook Version will work on my Ipad also?
